Armoured Bullion Trucks for African Banking Operations
Moving cash and bullion takes more than an armoured cab. Banks and cash-in-transit operators need a vehicle that protects the crew and the cargo. It also needs to support controlled access, carry a useful payload, provide effective monitoring and run reliably day after day.
Digital payments keep growing, but cash still moves between vaults, branches, ATMs and customer sites. South Africa's central bank, for example, calls banknotes and coins a critical payment instrument across both formal and informal markets. Secure transport keeps that cash moving.
Bullion and other high-value cargo put heavier demands on a vehicle. It has to carry the load and still keep access controlled, maintain a clear record of custody and stay available for the next run.
Security covers the whole trip
The job starts before the truck leaves and doesn't end until the receiving team signs for the delivery. Operators need controlled loading, a clear chain of custody, reliable communication and a record of every handover. The vehicle has to support that process through secure access, communication, tracking and a protected load compartment.
Absa, for example, lists controlled access, tracking and an audit trail as core parts of a cash-in-transit service.
Ghana's recent cash-in-transit framework shows how closely this work gets checked now. It covers certified armoured vehicles, tracking and communication systems, maintenance, inspection, licensing and crew training. Rules vary from country to country, but procurement teams end up asking the same questions: Can we verify the vehicle? Can we track the movement? Will it stay roadworthy for years of service?
Loading and access arrangements need to reflect the cargo, handling procedure and security requirements of the operation.
A bullion truck has to carry protection and payload
A bullion truck has to do several jobs at once. The crew compartment needs protection that matches the assessed threat. The vault has to match the cargo's weight, volume and how it gets loaded. Access points need controlled operation. And the surveillance and tracking systems have to keep the control room informed without slowing the crew down.
Weight drives most of the design decisions. Armour, the vault and security equipment all use part of the chassis capacity before the cargo is loaded. A platform built for branch cash collection won't necessarily handle a large bullion move. Engineers need to check the chassis, axle ratings, brakes, suspension, tyres and cooling system against the truck's full, loaded weight.
How the truck gets loaded matters too. It might carry a heavy, concentrated load for hours, then make a series of short stop-and-start moves at secure facilities. The vault's position, axle loading and access layout all need to handle both without hurting stability or slowing routine handovers.

Reliability matters for security too. A truck that's off the road too often throws off schedules, forces operators onto substitute vehicles and drives up cost. Buyers should ask about parts availability, maintenance access and support in the country where the truck will actually run.

Procurement teams should ask for evidence that the finished vehicle stays within its approved weight limits and that its main systems work under full load.

Central banks, commercial banks, cash-in-transit companies and cash-processing operators make up the main market. Gold producers, mining companies, refineries, mints and secure-logistics providers often need the same kind of platform for precious metals, banknotes, jewellery or other high-value cargo.
A central bank transfer, a mine-to-refinery run and a branch distribution route each place different demands on the truck. Cargo, distance, road conditions, staffing and how often access is needed should all shape the chassis, protection level and vault layout.
Questions to settle before procurement
A good specification should answer:
- What cargo weight and volume does the truck need to carry?
- How many crew members need protected seating?
- Which areas need ballistic protection?
- How will loading, unloading and compartment access work?
- Which tracking, surveillance and communication systems need to connect to the control room?
- What payload is left after the armour, vault and equipment go in?
- Who will maintain the truck, and where will replacement parts come from?
Answers to these give procurement teams a much better basis for comparing offers than an armour rating alone.
